Courtyard: A Spiritual Homeward Journey

A Unique Public Space Inspired by Traditional Chinese Architecture

Located in the heart of Shenyang, China, Courtyard is a high-end residential area that features a captivating public space designed by Kris Lin. Drawing inspiration from the courtyard style design method of traditional Chinese architecture, this project offers residents a spiritual homeward journey.

The Courtyard project is a 600sqm public space situated in the lobby and foyer of the residential area. Serving as the only way for residents to enter their homes, the designers aimed to create a space that evokes a sense of tranquility and belonging.

The concept of the Chinese courtyard was used as the foundation for the design, with a three-entry model of the outer court, inner courtyard, and inner house. This model symbolizes the journey from the outside world to a peaceful and warm home.

The design features several unique elements that contribute to its captivating ambiance. The water promenade, for example, serves as a metaphorical road to return home. It guides visitors through the space, offering a serene and contemplative experience.

The courtyard space is shaped by five garden elements: the bridge, pool, gable, tea room, and plum blossom. These elements not only enhance the visual appeal but also create a harmonious and immersive environment. The overwhelming sceneries take away the distractions of the mundane world, allowing visitors to find solace and peace of mind.

The interaction within the Courtyard is divided into three distinct areas. The outer court consists of the lobby and gallery space, where an installation art piece called "Bamboo Sound" conveys Chinese traditional culture. The inner courtyard represents the process of spiritual precipitation, with the water promenade symbolizing the path to return home. Finally, the inner house offers a warm and welcoming space, washing away the exhaustion of the body and providing a sense of comfort.

The Courtyard project was realized between April and October 2019 in Shenyang, China. It was exhibited in October 2019, showcasing the unique blend of traditional Chinese architecture and contemporary design.

Kris Lin, along with Jiayu Yang, formed the design team behind this remarkable project. Their research focused on the courtyard style design method of three-entry homes in traditional Chinese architecture, aiming to create a space that resonates with residents and offers a spiritual journey.

The Courtyard project has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

With its unique blend of traditional Chinese architecture and contemporary design, Courtyard offers residents and visitors a spiritual homeward journey. It serves as a tranquil oasis in the bustling city, providing a sense of belonging and peace of mind.
